Work Group 2
TIGER Standards & Interoperability Collaborative
Working together using this wiki
This wiki is a shared online whiteboard that allows the entire group to easily share information to each other and other TIGER collaborative team members. The material on the wiki should be considered to be in draft format and will be published on the TIGER website at www.tigersummit.com upon completion.
Activities of Work Group 2
Develop tutorials that educate health care workers/nurses and the basics and value of standards and interoperable systems.
Target audience: 2.9 million practicing nurse - (AD/BSN) - assume no prior informatics knowledge
Goal: Basic understanding of standards, benefits of interoperability, and the role of the nurse in using, promoting, developing standards and interoperable systems.
Fxve proposed categories of standards:
- Clinical care standards (e.g., using evidence-based practice tools and decision support)
- Terminology standards (eg., using nursing terminology)
- Information model standards (e.g., standardizing data elements, implementing electronic health records, electronic exchange of information for interoperability, etc.)
- Workflow standards (e.g., multidisciplinary view of similar information, etc.)
- Technical standards (e.g., HIPAA, quality of technology solution, etc.)
Determine the methodology for the tutorials - we'll start with PowerPoint(R)
Feb 5- Activity: Review and update learning bbjectives (8) v2 Draft below. Complete before Feb 12, 2008 by editing in the Wiki Draft below.
Feb 5- Activity: Read the ANA scope and standards to identify content for tutorials. Complete be fore the Work group 2 meeting in March

Drafts
Objectives: At the completion of the tutorial modules the nurse with a BSN and ADN practice will:
- Understand what is informatics and why technology and informatics are important to improve patient safety and the quality of healthcare. (Definition & Technology) - Penny D. tiger.wg2.objective1.ppt
- Understand the source for multiple healthcare information technology standards that are necessary for collecting, re-using and exchanging data and information among multiple health care professionals. (Standards) - Donna & use Ginny M. as resource
- Understand the benefits of interoperability of patient data, information and knowledge for patient safety and quality. (Interoperability) - Angela L. (not yet confirmed)
- Able to document coded nursing concepts and values using the international reference information model which facilitates the organized collection, association, storage and exchange of patient information. (Data use) - Jane B. & Karen M. (confirmed)
- Able to document and link nursing concepts for nursing process by using the American Nurses Association’s recognized reference and interface terminologies and evidence-based practices. (Workflow use) - Jane B.
- Able to identify when data quality and integrity has been jeopardized from altered use of valid and reliable patient assessment instruments or by missing or inaccurate documentation necessary to calculate/score a patient finding. (i.e. Glasgow Coma Scale, Children’s Coma Scale, NIH Stroke Scale, Geriatric Assessment Scale, Apgar Scale, Barthel Index, Aldreti Scales, Beck II Depression Inventory, Braden Scale, Morse Fall Risk score). (Information use) - Meg S. (confirmed)
- Able to access the evidence-based knowledge-resources for definitions for concepts, clarifying instructions on how to use, currency and primary source references, and other educational or research evidence regarding populations specific details for decision-making. (Knowledge use) - Jennifer B. (confirmed) TIGER_Standards_Tutorial_EBP[3].ppt
- Understand applied clinical decision support mechanisms within an interdisciplinary practice and appropriately responds to clinical decision support prompts and messages to close the loop. (Clinical Decision Support) - Valerie F. (confirmed) TIGER_Standards_Tutorial_#8_DRAFT1.ppt
